Ásatrú

Rituals

In the Ásatrú faith, there are the same obvious rituals as in all other faiths:

  • Naming of newborns
  • Rites of passage for young people
  • Hand-fasting (wedding)
  • Funeral procession

The rituals can be adapted to your specific wishes, and can be performed by a good friend or by a Gyðja or Goða. The important thing is that it is your ritual, to which you feel a personal connection.

If they need to be officially approved (e.g. wedding), you must go through one of the officially approved religious communities: Gatherings.

In addition to these obvious rituals, there are some annual events that can be celebrated:

  • Spring Equinox
  • Summer Solstice
  • Autumn Equinox
  • Dísablót – a blót to the female dieties before the harvest
  • Álfablót – Thanksgiving blót to nature’s bounty
  • Harvest Festival
  • Winter Solstice – Yule (Jól)
  • Heitstrenging, swearing an oath (the origin of the New Year’s resolution)
  • Til árs ok friðar – “For prosperity and peace”

You can arrange these yourself, on dates of your choice, or ask a local blót guild when they hold these.

Blót (regardless of season)

Raise a toast, light a candle, or make an offering (through water, fire, burying, dissolving in acid, blowing up, or however you feel like giving your gifts). Whether you believe in the Æsir and Vanir, or do it for your own psychological satisfaction; Taking action is always more satisfying than sitting idly by.
